We All Fall Down

Scene 1

A boy and a girl walk in holding hands and stop in front of a door. They are dressed plainly.

Rebecca: That movie was really great. Thanks for making a good choice. For once. (she laughs. He looks at her with sad eyes.) Just kidding! You know I love you.

Geoffrey: Yeah, yeah, yeah, ok. I love you too.

Rebecca: I know. Are you mad?

Geoffrey: Of course not. I could never be mad at you.

Rebecca: It’s because I’m so darn cute, right?

Geoffrey: (hugs her and lets go, then holds her at the waist.) Exactly.

Rebecca takes Geoffrey’s hands off of her waist.

Rebecca: Stop holding my waist. It’s so disgusting. I shouldn’t have had those milk duds.

Geoffrey: Shut up, that’s not true. You’re beautiful and you know it.

Rebecca: Yeah, whatever.

Geoffrey: I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it.

Rebecca: (sighs) Sorry. I know I always do this.

Geoffrey: Just stop being so….down on yourself.

Rebecca: I’ll try. Ok?

Geoffrey: Please do. Because you’re practically perfect and all that.

Rebecca: (gives Geoffrey a look) Ok, well, you better get going, you have a big day tomorrow.

Geoffrey: Alright. Goodnight Bex.

Rebecca: ’Night Geoffrey.

They kiss lightly. Rebecca opens the door and walks inside .
Geoffrey stands outside the door for a few seconds, almost looking as
though he is debating with himself. He takes out his cell phone and
dials.

Geoffrey: Hey, it’s me. Can you come outside for a second? (He hangs up the phone.) (mutters) I can’t believe I’m going to do this…ending it…it’s just….

The door opens.

Rebecca: (jokingly) Well hello there, long time no see.

Geoffrey: (serious) Hey…

Rebecca: What‘s up Geoff?.

Geoffrey: Ok, can I start off by saying that you are an absolutely wonderful girl? And any guy would be lucky to be with you?

Rebecca: I don’t like where this is going…What are you doing?

Geoffrey: It’s not you…

Rebecca: …it’s me. Great.

Geoffrey: Rebecca, listen to me, I don’t know, things just don’t feel right anymore.

Rebecca: What? I…I…I don’t understand.

Geoffrey: I don’t know…I could go into the reasoning if you want…

Rebecca: Yes, please.

Geoffrey: Well…I think that its because
you’re too….depressed. You never seem happy. I mean, I saw you at
rehearsal, and one of the first things you said to me was “I hate my
job.”

Rebecca: Um….duh. Everyone who works there hates it. You try working there…

Geoffrey: Don’t do that…please…I don’t
want to hurt you. It just kills me inside every time I see you unhappy
and I feel like it’s my fault that I can’t make it better,

Rebecca: I’m sure this is going to make you feel just wonderful…

Geoffrey: (gives her a pained look)…and…I
just know that even after this absolutely perfect night you’re going to
go up to your room and just type in your live journal what a terrible
night this was…

Rebecca: Yeah, too bad I was about to go up and say what an incredible time I had.

Geoffrey: Look, I know, but…well, I don’t know, but I just don’t feel like I can stay in this anymore.

Rebecca: I…(starts walking off) don’t…

Geoffrey starts to follow her.

Geoffrey: Are you ok?

Rebecca: (turns and looks at him) Am I ok? Am I OK? My boyfriend of 8 fucking months just broke up with me. Oh yeah, I’m fabulous!

Geoffrey: Look, I’m sorry….

Rebecca: Sorry? Sorry?! If you were sorry this wouldn’t have happened! What the hell am I supposed to do now?

Geoffrey: You’ll move on with your life…

Rebecca: Geoffrey. You are a fucking
asshole. What happened to the “I love you, never leave me” sweet
nothings that you were whispering in my ear last night?

Geoffrey: People change.

Rebecca: Not that fast. Not within the
span of 24 hours. I don’t even want to look at you right now. No, I
don’t even want to fucking talk to you.

Geoffrey: Bex…

Rebecca: Shut up. Shut the fuck up. You aren’t listening!

Geoffrey: I’m sorry…

Rebecca: Stop fucking saying that you fucking asshole. I fucking never want to talk to you again.

Geoffrey: Never?

Rebecca: (starts crying) No.

Geoffrey: Are you sure?

Rebecca: Am I crazy? Geoff, I love you, I don’t want to not talk to you. You were…are…my best friend. I want us to be friends.

Geoffrey: I want that too.

Rebecca: Do you? Really?

Geoffrey: I really do. And I’d still really like you to come with me to see the Last 5 Years on Tuesday.

Rebecca: Oh shit, I completely forgot about that.

Geoffrey: Will you please still come with me?

Rebecca: Yeah…I guess…I think we should give this being friends thing a shot.

Geoffrey: Are you sure?

Rebecca: Yeah…Look, I can’t deal with this anymore. I’m gonna go.

Geoffrey: Are you ok?

Rebecca: I’m walking away now.

Geoffrey: Goodnight Rebecca.

Rebecca: Goodnight Geoff.

Rebecca walks back inside the door. Geoff sighs.

Geoffrey: What have I gotten myself into?

Blackout.

Scene 2

The stage is empty except for a table, a chair, and a phone. The
phone rings. Rebecca walks onstage wearing jeans and a shirt. She picks
up the phone.

Rebecca: Hello?…Hi Michelle…Yeah,
I’m ok. Well, actually, not really…Well…it’s kind of a long story…Right
now?…Ok. See you in 10 minutes.

Rebecca walks offstage, then back on carrying car keys and her purse, now wearing a jacket. She calls offstage:

Rebecca: Mom, I’m going to Michelle’s for awhile. I don’t know when I’ll be back. Ok?

Mona: (from offstage) Ok, call me later.

Rebecca: (mutters) Yeah, right.

Rebecca walks offstage.

Blackout.

Scene 3

A girl (Michelle) is sitting down on a step outside a door. Rebecca
walks onstage and crosses over to her. Michelle jumps up and hugs her.

Michelle: So?

Rebecca: (sounding miserable) So.

Michelle: Are you going to tell me or do I have to read your mind?

Rebecca: Geoff broke up with me.

Michelle: NO WAY! That creep!

Rebecca: He’s not a creep.

Michelle: Yes he is, that’s why he broke up with you.

Rebecca: (starting to cry) No, its not.

Michelle: Oh, come to my bosom.

Rebecca: (crying but smiling at Michelle’s comment) Bosom?

Michelle: Thought it would make you smile.

Rebecca: Thanks.

Michelle: Now will you tell me what happened?

Rebecca: Well…he just said…that I was too depressed for him. And then later he said…

Michelle: You talked to him later? Haven’t I taught you anything?

Rebecca: (ignoring her) And later he said that I didn’t communicate well.

Michelle: I highly doubt that’s actually why he broke up with you. I think it’s because …

Rebecca: I really don’t think speculating on why he actually broke up with me will help.

Michelle: Yes it will. I think it’s
because he was afraid of commitment. He realized that you were such an
amazing person and never stopped being amazing, and since he’s so used
to things changing all the time, he felt like you were such a constant
in his life that maybe…maybe he felt like he had to change it up a
little bit to keep it with what he was used to.

Rebecca: Really?

Michelle: Really.

Rebecca: I don’t know…it was just so…sudden. (starts crying again)

Michelle: I know honey, I know.

Michelle hugs Rebecca to her. She sighs.

Michelle: Becca, I know that it
hurts now, but really, you’ll get over him. And you’ll realize that
you’re too good for him anyway.

Rebecca: I just want this to all be a bad dream.

Michelle: Me too.

Rebecca: And I don’t even understand, everyone even said I looked happy…

Michelle: Well, it always happens. When
you start going out with someone you get that happy glow…it seems like
nobody notices when it’s gone though.

Rebecca: Yeah. Thanks for being here for me.

Michelle: Shut up, you know I love you.

Rebecca: I know. Thanks though.

Michelle: You bet.

Rebecca: I just…don’t…understand. (crying again)

Michelle: It’s okay honey…It’s ok…

Rebecca looks up at Michelle, then at her shirt.

Rebecca: (laughing and sniffling at the same time) I made a mess of your shirt.

Michelle: It’s no big deal.

Rebecca: Okay.

Michelle: You better leave, your mom is probably wondering where you are.

Rebecca: I doubt it, but ok.

Michelle: I love you. Call me if you need anything.

Rebecca: I love you too. Talk to you later.

Michelle hugs Rebecca. Rebecca exits as Michelle opens the door.

Blackout.

Scene 4

Rebecca walks on stage. Mona is busy looking through some things on her desk.

Rebecca: Mom, can I talk to you for a second?

Mona: What is it, Becca? I’m really busy right now…

Rebecca: It’s really important mom.

Mona: Can it wait?

Rebecca: MOM! Jesus Christ! I want to
talk to you and you keep looking through all of your stupid things! You
don’t even care what I have to say.

Mona: (stops) Rebecca Enid Cohen! What are you talking about?

Rebecca: (starts walking off) Never mind. It doesn’t matter anyway.

Mona: Rebecca, come back here.

Rebecca: What?

Mona: I want to know what’s going on. Will you please tell me?

Rebecca: Why should I? It’s not like you’re actually paying attention to me anyway.

Mona: I am, please talk to me.

Rebecca: Yeah, for once.

Mona: I don’t like your attitude. What is going on here?

Rebecca: (starts to cry) Geoffrey broke up with me.

Mona: What?! When?

Rebecca: Last night. I wanted to tell you then, but you were already asleep.

Mona: Why didn’t you tell me earlier then? When we were watching TV?

Rebecca: I was just hoping it would all be a bad dream. And when Michelle called, I had to tell her.

Mona: Are you ok?

Rebecca: No.

Mona: Well, is there anything I can do? I mean…some sort of reaction you want me to have?

Rebecca: Screw it, mom, ok? It’s not
important. (mutters) I just wanted you to act like my mother for
once…(walking offstage) It would have been nice if you had told me it
was ok to cry.

Mona: (calls off) Rebecca!

Blackout.

Scene 5

Michelle and Rebecca are in an empty room sitting at a table.

Michelle: So, are you ready for this?

Rebecca: Oh yeah, I’m definitely ready for this. (sighs) Of course I’m not ready for this! What am I doing?

Michelle: You told him you wanted to be friends. It’s your fault you two are going on this non-date.

Rebecca: Gee, thanks for reminding me. This is not what I had in mind. Three months, maybe, two days? No way.

Michelle: Well, call me later and tell me how it goes.

Rebecca: Ok. Talk to you later?

Michelle: Of course. Later babe.

Rebecca: Bye.

They hug. Michelle walks off.

Blackout.

Scene 6

Geoffrey and Rebecca sit in theater style seats facing the audience. They both look uncomfortable at being together.

Geoffrey: So.

Rebecca: So.

Geoffrey: How’ve you been?

Rebecca: Not great. You?

Geoffrey: Same.

Rebecca: Good.

Geoffrey: Right...

There is an awkward pause where neither of them look at each other.

Geoffrey: So.

Rebecca: So.

Rebecca puts her arm on the armrest. Geoffrey puts his arm on the
armrest next to hers three seconds later. They touch and they look at
each other, then take their arms off at the same time.

Geoffrey: So. This is awkward.

Rebecca: Yeah, just a tad.

Geoffrey: I’m sorry.

Rebecca: Stop saying that.

Geoffrey: I can’t help it.

Rebecca: Well try.

Geoffrey: I am.

Rebecca: Good.

Geoffrey: So how about after tonight we just call it quits?

Rebecca: I…I guess.

Geoffrey: Ok.

Blackout.

Scene 7

Split scene

On one side is Geoffrey and Emily. Emily is wearing a cute skirt and a jacket. Geoffrey is dressed in normal street clothes.

On the other side Rebecca and Michelle. Rebecca is wearing pajamas. Michelle is wearing jeans and a t-shirt.

Rebecca: I still don’t understand.

Michelle: I know sweetie.

Geoffrey: I just can’t help it, I’ve liked you for a while.

Emily: What?

Rebecca: I mean, I know he told me…

Geoffrey: And ever since Rebecca and I broke up…

Rebecca: I mean four days ago everything was perfect…

Geoffrey: I just thought…

Rebecca: I don’t know, maybe its something else…

Geoffrey: Well, what I’m trying to say is…

Rebecca: Another girl or something…

Geoffrey: Will you go out with me?

Rebecca: What do you think Michelle?

Michelle: I think you’re being paranoid.

Emily: Yes! I can’t believe something this wonderful actually happened to me!

Geoffrey and Emily hug.

Rebecca: Something tells me I’m not.

Rebecca and Michelle hug.

Geoffrey: This is so great.

Blackout.

Scene 8

Rebecca is sitting in her room staring at the wall. She is wearing pajamas and wrapped in a blanket.

Rebecca: (humming) Once upon a time I was falling in love, now I’m only falling apart…

Emily knocks.

Emily: Bex?

Rebecca: Hey Emily.

Emily: I came as soon as I heard. How are you doing?

Rebecca: I’m doing fantastically, can’t you tell?

Emily: I’m sorry.

Rebecca: Don’t say that. It’s not your fault.

Emily: Well…maybe it is.

Rebecca: How could it possibly be your fault? You didn’t tell Geoff to break up with me.

Emily: Yeah.

Rebecca: So how’d you hear?

Emily: Geoff told me.

Rebecca: Oh yeah. How is he? (hopeful) Does he miss me?

Emily: He’s ok. I’m sure he misses you. Just not as much as you want him to. (sighs) Bex…

Rebecca: (suddenly harsh) Don’t call me that. I don’t ever want to hear Geoff’s nickname for me EVER.

Emily: (defensive) Sorry. I won’t do it again.

Rebecca: I’m sorry Em, I didn’t mean to take it out on you.

Emily: I know you didn’t. You can’t help it, you’re upset.

Rebecca: Yeah. Well, I think I’m gonna go sleep some more.

Emily: Rebecca, you really need to get out and about….and eat. You’re not going to have any energy to do anything ever.

Rebecca: How can I help it? I can’t feel anything. I’m not hungry, and I just want to sleep to forget it all.

Emily: (sighs) Alright, if that’s what you want. But please eat something. Before you know it we’ll be able to see through you.

Rebecca: Stop worrying about me, ok? I‘m fine. Or I will be anyway.

Emily: Ok.

(Emily starts to go, then before she walks off she stops.)

Emily: Rebecca, can we talk?

Rebecca: (already starting to get under the covers) I’m getting ready to sleep.

Emily: I know, but…

Rebecca: (putting her head on the pillow) Tomorrow. Or later. Right now, it’s off to la la land where no breakups exist.

Emily: (sighs) Alright. Sleep well, Becca.

Rebecca is already asleep. Emily looks at her, then walks out the door.

Blackout.

Scene 9

Emily is sitting on a bench onstage. Geoffrey walks on looking
worried. When he sees her, his face lights up. He walks over to her and
sits on the bench next to Emily.

Geoffrey: Hey gorgeous.

Emily: Hey yourself.

Geoffrey: How are you?

Emily: Much better now that I’ve seen you.

Geoffrey: Me too.

Emily: Geoff, I don’t like hiding this from Becca.

Geoffrey: What, you didn’t tell her?

Emily: I tried to, but all she wanted to do was sleep. I think you may have helped her sink deeper into depression.

Geoffrey: What else could I do? I couldn’t go on dating her while I was falling love with you.

Emily: What?!? Geoff, what are you talking about?

Geoffrey: I’m telling you, I’ve been in
love with you since practically the day that I met you. I can’t just
say that I don’t love you.

Emily: Geoff, this is serious. Because I think…I think I love you too.
Geoffrey: This is wonderful!

At this point Michelle walks onstage and looks at Emily and Geoffrey incredulously.

Michelle: Wonderful? Wonderful?!?
Are you crazy? Emily, how could you do this to one of your best
friends? She trusts you and cares for you. I may not like you much, but
you could have told her.

Emily: I tried to tell her yesterday…

Michelle: Tried to tell her yesterday!
That’s not good enough! You shouldn’t have TRIED to tell her yesterday,
you should have TOLD her yesterday. Trying is not good enough.

Geoffrey: Hey now Michelle…

Michelle: And I haven’t even gotten to
you, you creep. You were cheating on Rebecca from day one if you were
in love with Michelle. You could have just NOT gone out with her at all…

Geoffrey: What do you mean? I couldn’t turn down Rebecca…

Michelle: You very well could have, and you know it. And to just lie to her all that time…

Geoffrey: I’m sorry, what business is this of yours?

Michelle: The fact that she’s my best friend makes it my business.

Emily: She’s my friend too.

Michelle: Like hell you are. Friends don’t date friends ex-boyfriends.

Emily: Please, the girl conduct?

Michelle: Yes, the girl conduct. Only really bad friends don’t follow it.

Geoffrey: Don’t call her a bad friend.

Michelle: Why shouldn’t I call her a bad
friend? She’s dating you, isn’t she? And you are the biggest creep I
know, going out with her two weeks after you and Rebecca broke up.

Emily: (softly) Four days.

Michelle: (exploding) Four days? FOUR DAYS!!??!?!?

Geoffrey: Geez, don’t have a cow.

Michelle: I am going to leave now. And I am going to tell Rebecca by Friday about this little secret of yours.

Geoffrey and Emily: you can‘t do that…how could you (ad lib)

Michelle: I can and I will. She is my best friend, which makes her more important than the two of you combined.

Michelle starts walking offstage. Geoffrey and Emily look at each other.

Michelle: You two are the scum of the earth.

Michelle walks off.

Geoffrey: So do we tell her?

Emily: I tried.

Geoffrey: Try again.

Emily: Why don’t you try? I already did.

Geoffrey: Please, like she would talk to me. Why don’t we just let Michelle tell her?

Emily: Because then neither of us stand any chance of forgiveness.

Geoffrey: Do you really want her forgiveness?

Emily: I’d like to at least have the option of being friends with her.

Geoffrey: Whatever. Then go tell her.

Emily: Geoff, don’t do this.

Geoffrey: Emily, I don’t like Rebecca.
She’s too dark, too down, all the time. I don’t want to be friends with
someone like that.

Emily: Well, maybe it’ll just take time.

Geoffrey: Whatever. I’m gonna go home. Just let me know if you tell her.

Emily: Ok. I love you.

Geoffrey: I love you too.

Geoffrey and Emily walk offstage on opposite sides.

End of Act 1

Act 2

Scene 1

Michelle walks into Rebecca’s room. Rebecca is laying in bed, under
the covers. Michelle pulls back the covers and stares at Rebecca.

Michelle: (sweetly) Rebecca…..hey sweetie, its time to get you out of this room for a bit.

Rebecca turns over and puts the pillow over her head.

Michelle: Come on, you can’t hide forever.

Rebecca: (mumbles something incoherent)

Michelle: (getting impatient) Hey Becca. Get up.

Rebecca: Why? What’s the point?

Michelle: Oh, so the dead DO speak.

Rebecca: (turns over so she’s now on her back) Ha ha. Very funny. Why should I get up?

Michelle: Because I said so, now do it.

Rebecca: That’s not good enough.

Michelle: I don’t care if that’s good enough, you are getting up. NOW!

Rebecca: (stands up) Jeez, fine.

Michelle: Thank you. Took you long enough. Now we’ve got some FUN stuff to do today!

Rebecca: Fun? I don’t understand that word.

Michelle: Obviously. Well, let me outline for you.

Rebecca: (sits back down on bed) Oh goodie.

Michelle: Be nice. Since you ARE coming with me. I miss my friend.

Rebecca: And where are we going?

Michelle: Actually, now that I think about it, I don’t want to tell you. It’s a surprise.

Rebecca: Surprises don’t treat me well. Nothing matters. I feel like…..like squozen toothpaste. That’s right, I said squozen.

Michelle: Well, you seem to be getting your personality back. Squozen is not a word, sweetheart.

Rebecca: Humor me. I just got dumped, you have to do things that make me happy. And making up words makes me happy.

Michelle: Of course it does. But come on, get up! Throw on some jeans and come out with me!

Rebecca: Tell me where we’re going and I’ll consider it.

Michelle: I have some people that I want you to meet.

Rebecca: Oh yeah? What kind of people?

Michelle: Surprise, woman! Surprise!

Rebecca: Ugh, fine. I’ll meet you downstairs.

Michelle: Good.

Blackout.

Scene 2

Michelle and Rebecca walk into the park. They sit down.

Rebecca: So where are these people that you said we were meeting?

Michelle: Somewhere. So are things getting any better with you?

Rebecca: What?! You were in my room this morning. Obviously.

Michelle: (looking past Rebecca) Hey, isn’t that Brandon?

Rebecca: Hmm? Oh, yeah, I guess.

Michelle: I’m gonna wave him over. Ok?

Rebecca: Yeah, I guess.

Michelle: Brandon! Over here!

A boy enters wearing casual clothes. He walks over to Michelle and
Rebecca. Brandon and Michelle act very obviously about this being
planned.

Brandon: Hey, I didn’t know you were gonna be here.

Michelle: Yeah, we know.

Brandon: Good to see you out of the house, Becca.

Rebecca: (oblivious) Yeah, well, apparently there was someone I had to meet.

Brandon: And did you meet said person?

Rebecca: Not yet. We’re waiting for them to get here. (to Michelle) Who was this person that we were meeting?

Brandon: Um, that would be me.

Rebecca: Oh! Really?

Brandon: Yeah, is that ok? If its not I could just…well, leave, I guess.

Michelle: No, Brandon, stay! Keep my good friend here company while I go get some ice cream for the three of us. What flavors?

Brandon and Rebecca: (at the same time) Chocolate Malted Crunch.

Brandon and Rebecca laugh.

Michelle: Three chocolate malted crunch cones, coming right up.

Michelle exits.

Rebecca: So you were the person that we were really meeting?

Brandon: Yeah. Really, is this ok? I don’t want to make you uncomfortable or anything…

Rebecca: It’s fine. If anything, I’m glad it was you that met us here.

Brandon: Ok. So how have you been doing?

Rebecca: I’ve been better.

Brandon: Of course. Have you talked to Emily lately?

Rebecca: Not since she came over the other day. Why, is there something going on with her?

Brandon: (looking suddenly uncomfortable) Um…

Rebecca: Brandon, tell me. Friends don’t keep secrets from…

Brandon: (interrupting) She’s dating Geoff now.

Rebecca: Oh.

Brandon: Oh indeed.

Rebecca: How…how…when…how long?

Brandon: That’s not important…

Rebecca: Just tell me.

Brandon: I don’t know…

Rebecca: Of course. I knew it. I mean, I even told Michelle that I thought something was up…

Brandon: No one knew it was coming…

Rebecca: But I should have seen it. We all should have.

Brandon: But we didn’t. And he’s stupid
anyway for dumping such an amazing girl like you. I mean, what kind of
idiot just breaks up with someone so fantastic for some other girl that
isn’t…

Rebecca interrupts and kisses Brandon. Brandon breaks away.

Brandon: Rebecca…

Rebecca: If he can do it, why can’t I?

Brandon: Rebecca, look, I’m here for you, but I don’t want to just be your hook up buddy to get back at Geoffrey.

Rebecca: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to make it like that…

Brandon: I know. It’s hard to take news
like that, and you’re hurting right now, and I understand that…I just
don’t want you doing something that you’ll regret.

Rebecca: I know. Dammit, I always mess things up!

Brandon: Don’t be so hard on yourself.

Rebecca: It’s just that…well…

Brandon: Look, Rebecca. I like you. A lot. And I have even since before you and Geoff started dating.

Rebecca: Brandon…

Brandon: No, really. And I don’t want…

Rebecca: Brandon, stop talking.

Brandon: Ok.

Rebecca: Why didn’t you ever tell me that you liked me before?

Brandon stays silent.

Rebecca: Was it because you were scared? Or nervous? Or because I was with Geoff? Or…well, what was it?

Brandon stays silent.

Rebecca: Brandon?

Brandon: You told me to stop talking.

Rebecca: Well, you can talk now.

Brandon: Well, I never told you I liked
you because…well, you pretty much named all the reasons. I was going to
tell you literally the day before you and Geoff started dating…

Rebecca: Well, why didn’t you?

Brandon: I called your house, and your mom answered.

Rebecca: Oh god.

Brandon: She said that you weren’t home
and that she wasn’t sure when you’d be back, and then she asked if I
was another one of the guys that paid you.

Rebecca: My mom said that?

Brandon: Yeah. I wasn’t gonna say anything…

Rebecca: She’s such a bitch. I can’t wait until I’m 18 and can move out.

Brandon: Yeah. So like I said, I was going to tell you…

Rebecca: But then my evil mom stepped in and ruined things. Thanks mom, thanks a lot.

Brandon: Well, maybe its good that she said that. And that I didn’t tell you.

Rebecca: Brandon…If I had known you liked me, Geoff and I never would have happened.

Brandon: What?

Rebecca: How long have we known each other?

Brandon: I don’t know…since 3rd grade?

Rebecca: And how long have we been actual friends?

Brandon: Since 6th grade.

Rebecca: Ok, and during that time, I had a crush on you. Do you know when it started?

Brandon: No.

Rebecca: Since 4th grade. When we sat next to each other while we made puppets.

Brandon: Really?

Rebecca: Really.

Brandon: This is crazy.

Rebecca: Yeah, well, I wish you would have said something sooner.

Brandon: Well, I need to go think about
whats going on. I don’t understand it at all, one second we’re just
friends, the next we’re mutual crushes?

Michelle walks back in with two ice cream cones.

Rebecca: Ok.

Brandon: I’ll see you around, k girls?

Michelle: But I just got back with the ice cream!

Brandon: Only two cones. Go ahead, you enjoy ‘em, I’ll get my own later.

Michelle: Suit yourself.

Rebecca: Take all the time you need Brandon.

Brandon: Later gators.

Brandon exits.

Michelle: What was that all about?

Rebecca: Just some old business we were taking care of.

Michelle: Care to fill me in?

Rebecca: No. When were you going to tell me that Emily and Geoff were dating?

Michelle: He told you? He wasn’t supposed to! Emily or Geoff were going to by Friday…

Rebecca: Good to know I had to find out from someone who I isn’t even in that circle.

Michelle: Becca, I was going to tell you, I just thought it would be better to hear it from Geoff or Emily.

Rebecca: Ok.

Michelle: Don’t be upset, we were doing it for your benefit.

Rebecca: Whatever, Geoff can do what he
wants. He’s his own person. And to quote Brandon, he’s stupid for
breaking up with such an amazing and fantastic girl anyway.

Michelle: Whoa, I went to get some ice cream and I come back and you’re a changed person!

Rebecca: Yeah, well, things are starting to look up.

Blackout.

Scene 2

Emily is laying on Geoff’s bed, looking through a magazine, while Geoff is sitting on the bed looking out the window.

Emily: So do you want to go out?

Geoffrey: I was thinking I’d go to the arcade with Jimmy or something.

Emily: The arcade? What are you 12?

Geoffrey: Yeah, I just don’t look it.

Emily: So you got me, the girl of your dreams and you want to go to the arcade? Real classy.

Geoffrey: Look, I just need a little break, ok? We’ve been hanging out every day for the past two weeks…

Emily: Whatever. (Emily gets up to leave) I’ll see you later then, I guess.

Geoffrey: Are you mad? Don’t be mad, I just…come here.

Emily goes to him.

Geoffrey: (kisses her forehead) I love you, ok. The boys are just starting to think that I’ve been abducted or something.

Emily: Ok. Have fun.

Geoffrey: Dinner tonight?

Emily: Nah, its ok, take a break.

Geoffrey: Tomorrow then?

Emily: Call me.

Emily exits. Geoffrey takes out his phone and dials.

Geoffrey: Hey Brandon, it’s Geoff

Brandon appears off to the side.

Brandon: Hey.

Geoffrey: Wanna go to the arcade?

Brandon: Not really.

Geoffrey: Why not?

Brandon: I’ve got plans with a girl.

Geoffrey: You’ve gotta be kidding me…

Brandon: Nope, Becca and I are going to a movie.

Geoffrey: Becca? My Becca?

Brandon: She’s not yours. Not anymore.

Geoffrey: Yeah. I’m just getting used to that fact…

Blackout.

Scene

Rebecca and Michelle are sitting in a bedroom, with Michelle reading a magazine and Rebecca staring out the window.

Michelle: So.

Rebecca: Hm.

Michelle: You’re going out with Brandon tonight?

Rebecca: Yeah.

Michelle: What are you gonna wear?

Rebecca: Something.

Michelle: Rebecca, wake up!

Rebecca: I don’t know.

Michelle: I’m dying of cancer and I’m going to make sure you aren’t invited to my funeral.

Rebecca: Maybe tomorrow.

Michelle: REBECCA!

Rebecca: What?

Michelle: You are so distracted. Whats going on in that head of yours?

Rebecca: I was just thinking about how you’re dying of cancer and you aren’t gonna invite me to the funeral.

Michelle: Ha. Ha. Funny girl, are we?

Rebecca: I’m just kind of nervous about this date with Geoff tonight.

Michelle: Um, maybe you shouldn’t go on this date then.

Rebecca: And why not?

Michelle: Because you just said Geoff.

Rebecca: Shit! I can’t do that tonight, Brandon would not be happy.

Michelle: You’re going too fast. You aren’t ready to date again yet.

Rebecca: I have to get back into the swing of things at some point.

Michelle: How about in a few weeks?

Rebecca: You never know if you’re truly ready until you take the plunge…

Michelle: What are you, a fortune cookie?

Rebecca: I just think I need to go on this date. See if things work out in some mysteriously better way.

Michelle: Ok. If you say so.

Rebecca: And I do.

Michelle: Well, then who am I to stop you?

Rebecca: You’re just voicing your opinion.

Michelle: Have a good time tonight.

Rebecca: Thanks.

The phone rings.

Michelle: Hello?

Rebecca: (in a stage whisper) Who is it?

Michelle: Emily…Emily, calm down, whats going on?

Rebecca: Ugh, its Emily? Who cares.

Michelle: (to Rebecca) Shut up! Emily, what happened?…Where are you now?…Ok, we’ll be right there. She hangs up the phone.

Rebecca: So?

Michelle: Geoff is…

Rebecca: Oh my god! Is he ok?

Michelle: He’s at the hospital now in a coma.

Rebecca: Let’s go.

Michelle: No, you have your date…

Rebecca: Brandon will understand.

Michelle: If you’re sure.

Rebecca: I am. Let’s go.

Blackout.

Scene

Emily is sitting in a chair, looking like she‘s praying for Geoffrey.

Emily: Geoff…I’m here for you. I love you.

Rebecca and Michelle walk in. Emily looks up.

Rebecca: What happened?

Emily: When I got to his house he was on
the floor curled up in a ball. There was bottle of pills lying open
next to him…and note. All it said was if you find me, take me to the
hospital.

Rebecca: Why? Why would he..what happened?

Michelle: Guys, calm down, everything will be ok.

Rebecca: Yeah, right.

Emily: I don’t even know what kind of pills they were…and I thought he was so happy.

Rebecca: Happy with you? Ha.

Michelle: Rebecca!

Rebecca: (matter of fact) She stole my boyfriend.

Michelle: That shouldn’t matter now,
right now one of both of your best friends is lying in a hospital bed
in a coma in that room, and you should be making amends.

Emily: She’s right.

Rebecca: Shut up, ho.

Michelle: Rebecca, what the hell has come over you?

Rebecca: I don’t know…this is how I deal with grief…I get bitchy.

Michelle: Well stop it.

Emily: No, she’s right. I did steal her
boyfriend. Rebecca, I tried to tell you that first night I came over
that we were together but…

Rebecca: That was five days after we broke up. Are you kidding me?!

Michelle: That’s not important now either.

Rebecca: Whatever. I’m going to find out how he’s doing.

Emily: So will I.

Michelle: They aren’t going to tell a couple of teenagers…

Rebecca and Emily both glare at Michelle.

Michelle: Sorry, just telling you like it is.

Mona enters.

Rebecca: Mom? What are you doing here?

Mona: I heard that you were here because Geoffrey was here, I came to see what was going on.

Rebecca: Well, nothing is going on, Geoff’s just sick.

Mona: All of you wouldn’t be here if he was just sick.

Rebecca: Whatever mom, just go home.

Mona: Rebecca, why do you always push me away?

Rebecca: I don’t want to have this conversation here and now.

Mona: Well that’s too bad, because you are.

Rebecca: Go home, mom.

Mona: No.

Rebecca: You want to know why I push you away? Why I never tell you anything?

Mona: Yes.

Rebecca: Because you don’t care about me
like a mom should! You act more like another girl my age who just wants
to hear the gossip so she can spread it to her friends. Well, I’m sick
of it, and I don’t want you spreading my life around to everyone who
has ears. Go home mom, I don’t want you here.

Mona: I don’t tell anyone what you tell me.

Rebecca: Go. Home.

Mona: My baby is in pain, I’m here to help out.

Rebecca: I’m not a baby, I don’t need you here, go home.

Mona: If that’s really what you want.

Rebecca: Go.

Mona exits.

Michelle: Rebecca, you’re not helping the situation.

Rebecca: What situation?! We’re sitting
in a lobby waiting to find out of Geoffrey is going to live through the
night or not. My mom being here will not do anything for anyone.

Michelle: Ok. Stop yelling at me.

Emily: Here comes the doctor.

Doctor: I’m sorry girls…You’re friend…

Rebecca: Oh my god.

Emily: (opening and closing her mouth as though trying to speak)

Michelle: What happened?

Doctor: He wasn’t found soon enough. The pills had already gotten into his bloodstream and it was too late.

Michelle: Thanks for everything.

The Doctor exits. Emily and Rebecca look at each other, then grab onto each other crying.

Michelle: Well, at least some good came of this..
